Auditory re-education and sound stimulation training had been around since the 1940's when a French ear surgeon, Dr. Alfred Tomatis* discovered the role of the ear and hearing in brain development and organization. Tomatis showed that our auditory nerve is fundamental to human neurology; it helps to regulate not only balance and spatial orientation, but also our vision and tactile senses. His Tomatis Effect: the voice can only produce those sounds that the ear can hear, explains why it is necessary to condition the ear and brain to accurately hear the notes, sounds, or words in your head first. Once this is accomplished, you will see a difference in your speaking or singing voice as well as in playing musical instruments. Tomatis also discovered that sound frequencies are nutrients that stimulate the brain and affect our learning and behavior. In clinical studies, Tomatis discovered that the higher frequencies (above 3000 Hz) stimulated higher levels of thinking and mood. Tomatis developed the Electronic Ear, which progressively filtered out the lower frequencies of Mozart music for clients who listen through headphones for several hours each day. The Tomatis Method is not inexpensive; each 60-hour program costs about $3,500. Not until The Listening Program™ has there been an auditory training program made available outside of the clinical setting that comes as close to being a 'home-based Tomatis program' and which is affordable for most families.
